What's Up With Human Chromosome 2 On A Most Real Level

- Chimpanzees have more chromosomes than we do: a total of 48.
- One could say we are missing 2 chromosomes given we have 2 less at 46.
- Where did they go?
- Gregg is saying - It's not actually missing. That it's been modified and arranged in a way that wasn't obvious in the past as we didn't have the DNA sequencing technology to see it.
- Human Chromosome 2 (HC2)
- The second largest chromosome in the human body - forms 8% of the DNA in cells is HC2 - This contains the smaller "missing" chromosome found in the chimpanzee genome.
- This points to the hypothesis that two separate chimpanzee chromosomes were combined into a single longer chromosome, that is what we call HC2.
- FOXP2 - It is acknowledged that mutations have occurred in FOXP2.
- How did the 2 combine into 1?
- Science Explanation: "We conclude that the locus cloned in cosmids c8.1 and c29B is the relic of an ancient telomere-telomore fusion and marks the point at which two ancestral ape chromosomes fused to give rise to human chromosome 2.
- Regular Person Explanation: It appears that long ago two separate chromosomes from chimpanzees (2A and 2B) merged or fused into the single, larger human chromosome 2 - which is one of the key chromosomes that give us our humanness.
